Greener Abode Acts

After my skeptical Earth Day article, I figure I should at least give some hope to those wanting and willing to green their homes.  To this end, I have put together a simple list of 10 Greener Abode Actions that you can take.

  1. Unplug unused appliances to limit passive electricity usage.

  2. Replace your old appliances with energy efficient ones as they age.  In many cases, you can receive a rebate.

  3. Replace light bulbs with energy efficient ones as they burn out.

  4. Dim or turn off your lights when you leave the room (even for a few minutes).

  5. Water your plants in the early morning or evening to minimize unnecessary evaporation.

  6. Reuse the waste water from your laundry to water your lawn or, better yet, drought-resistant plants.

  7. Compost your kitchen scraps and yard waste.

  8. Recycle what you can and invent a new use for what you have; we punched holes in plastic bottles to for quick and cheap drip irrigation.

  9. Improve interior air quality by using non-toxic, natural cleaning products. They're better for you, your family members, your pets and the environment.

  10. When painting, using only paint free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
